Eric Sarmiento’s latest record, ‘the friend is this animal,’ deals with the ways that space and what we think of as ‘ourselves’ are produced together, actively constructed through the negotiations and mediations of countless people and things that make up the world and each other. Attraction between people; streets and seasons and how they’re inseparable from the connections we find with others; cities and abandoned streets, correspondence trickling to a halt, hope discovered in sleepless early morning hours, dreams of sun-drenched southern islands…. This album follows ‘the declaration of interdependence’ and ‘moonlight is sunlight,’ prior to which Eric was performing with the Candles, the Pistol Arrows, a Suncrush for Sweethearts, and the New Tribe. Having spent the last several years in New Jersey, Eric is currently nomadic. |
